What is Leucoderma/Vitiligo (सफेद दाग) ?

Leucoderma (Vitiligo) is a chronic skin condition that is characterized by patchy loss of skin pigmentation, resulting in irregular white patches of skin. The white patches often change shape, shrink or grow. They may even remain constant throughout the life. They may at times occur symmetrically on both sides of the body. In rare cases a person can have lip-tip vitiligo, which is vitiligo/leucoderma on lips, fingertips and toes. Vitiligo on the scalp may affect the color of the hair (though not always), leaving white streaks. It similarly may affect facial and body hair. The disorder occurs when the melanocytes, cells responsible for skin pigmentation, function abnormally or die.

What are the Causes?

The precise cause of vitiligo is complex and not fully understood. It is attributed to a combination of environmental, genetic and autoimmune factors. Sometimes an accidental cut, ulcer or rash may damage the melanocytes cells, which produce melanin pigment, and cause white spots on skin.

It is common in people with immunity problems. It may also be caused by stress affecting the immune system. A combination of factors like autoimmune problem, genetic factor and stress may result in this disorder.

How fast does the disease Spread?

It may begin at any age from children under one year of age to males and females above the age of 80. Generally around half of the people affected by this disease develop the patches before their twenties.

The spread of the white patches on skin varies from person to person. In some individuals the white spots on skin may not spread at all and remain constant the entire life. In others the spread may be gradual and in certain cases it may spread very fast within a few months time.

If a treatment given by a vitiligo specialist suits the body, vitiligo can be cured in many cases.

STRESS AND SOCIAL STIGMA
Other than the cosmetic skin problem, many patients face psychological stress, which in turn may result in increased susceptibility to vitiligo. There is a social stigma attached to this disease affecting the social well-being of the patient, especially in countries like India, where the people are dark skinned and white patches on face, lips, hands and exposed skin stand out.

Often in India vitiligo/ leucoderma is equated with leprosy. But this disease is not spread by touch as it is not caused by any bacteria, virus or germ. It is a totally benign disorder and neither harms the patient nor the people around him/her.

The individuals suffering from the disease should not shy away from social gatherings and maintain self-confidence. The family and friends should help the patients, especially children, to cope up with this skin de-colouration problem that does not harm the body in any other way.

SYMPTOMS:

  • Some of the symptoms are:
  • White patches on the skin, including the face, limbs, torso, and groin
  • Golden brown patches on mucous membranes and around the eyes, nostrils, and mouth
  • Premature graying of hair

Leucoderma/ Vitiligo cannot be termed as diseases as it is a purely cosmetic problem and is more suitably termed as skin disorders.

CONVENTIONAL TREATMENTS:

Vitiligo / Leucoderma is largely considered incurable and a very difficult disease.

  • The vitiligo treatments and medication often used are:
  • Prolonged exposure to Ultra Violet rays (UVA and UVB)
  • Steroid creams/ointment and pills (application and oral)
  • Cosmetic surgery/grafting
  • De-pigmentation (opposite of pigmentation as killing the remaining pigmented cells making the entire body pale/white in colour).

Some of these have their ill-effects, are not a proven cure and are generally unaffordable by the masses. Prolonged exposure to UV rays may cause Skin Cancer and other problems like cataract.

  • Use of cortisones/steroids may result in:
  • Swollen body
  • Unnatural weight gain
  • Increased blood sugar and diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Bones becoming hollow (osteoporosis)
  • Cataract formation etc.

Vitiligo cure in ayurveda (ayurvedic treatment of vitiligo) consists of a combination of age-old healing herbs, many of which are good for the overall health and immunity of the body.
